According to local weather observer Dan Kafka, 2.2 inches of snow fell the day after Christmas, Dec. 26. Cold weather set in over the weekend, and Holyoke got another 2.4 inches of snow Monday, Dec. 29, with a high of 17 degrees. Streets were snow-packed and driving conditions were rough as winds accompanied the snowfall.

Holyoke JR/SR High athletic director Sandra Rahe said the number of available basketball officials has seen a steady decline in the last three years, and this year there’s a significant shortage.

 

Ten Years Ago
Dec. 31, 2009

Problems concerning patient billing were addressed and explained to East Phillips County Hospital District board members at their Dec. 22 meeting. It was brought to their attention that there is a problem with accounts receivable, and a handful of patients have voiced their concern with recent statements.

Temperatures fell as low as 5 degrees on Christmas Eve, with snow and high winds hitting the area on Christmas Day, and by the next day there was about 3 inches of snow on the ground.

Jan. 5, 1995

Leo F. Mailander recently earned his broker’s license through the Colorado Real Estate Commission. The Holyoke native opened Unique Realty at 143 S. Campbell Ave. this week.

Members of the Holyoke Christian Church youth group were recently involved in a program that was described as unique, meaningful and almost revolutionary. In October, the junior and senior high students toured the High Plains Youth Center in Brush. The older members in the group took it a step further and returned in November and December to be involved in an experimental interaction program.

Jan. 1, 1970

No Zwaanpoly beets will be purchased by The Great Western Sugar Company in 1970, according to a joint statement released today by GW and The Mountain States Beet Growers Marketing Association of Colorado and Kansas. Decision on the nonacceptability of beets grown from the Dutch seed was based on a unanimous recommendation made Dec. 17 by members of the Grower-GW Joint Research Committee.

On Jan. 6 there will be a stitchery club organizational meeting in the courthouse community room for all women interested in creative stitchery. The meeting is sponsored by the ladies of the Jolly Dozen Extension Club of Holyoke.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago
Jan. 4, 1945

Ray Dindinger moved his office from his residence to the R.N. White building north of the bowling alleys during the past week. Another office is being opened at Julesburg by Mr. Dindinger to serve that community in electrical supplies and service.

Foundations have been poured and superstructure started on several new buildings in Holyoke. A new barber shop for Shorty Harmon is being built north of the Butane-Propane Service. A cleaning plant is being built by C. Cockran on the lot west of Leonard’s service station. Ground has been broken for a new garage and service station on the corner a block west of the Scholl oil station. And a new welding and repair shop is being started on the lots south of the Holyoke Implement Company.
