Five Years Ago — April 23, 2015

As one of two rural Colorado school districts to have experienced achievement gap closure for economically disadvantaged students over the last six years, Holyoke Re-1J will be recognized by the Colorado Department of Education. Tina Goar, rural field support manager with CDE, will attend the Emerald Awards program on April 23 to make the award presentation to the local school district.

Elna Johnson, longtime co-publisher of The Holyoke Enterprise, received the Nebraska Press Association’s highest honor April 17 when she was named Master Editor-Publisher. She received the award at the Nebraska Press Convention held in Lincoln, Nebraska, last week. This marks the first time in the 44-year history of the award that a woman publisher has been honored.

Holyoke Fitness Club held its open house last Saturday, April 18, marking the official opening of the new downtown business, located at 123 S. Interocean Ave. in Holyoke.

 

Ten Years Ago — April 22, 2010

Colorado U.S. Route 6 Heritage Corporation will sponsor its third annual car show and historical presentation Saturday, April 24. A Model T and Model A car show will take place across the street from the Peerless Center on Interocean Avenue.

Joe and Nancy Giguere stopped in Holyoke on their way home to Holyoke, Massachusetts, via the Historic Route 6.

HHS senior Chad Stroh has been named the Dave Schultz High School Excellence state award winner in Colorado. The National Wrestling Hall of Fame & Museum has selected its 2010 state and regional winners as part of its Educational Outreach Program.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago — April 27, 1995

After starting and organizing an on-grounds school at Teen Acres in Sterling, followed by 11 years of teaching at the school, Jackie Reynolds will be honored April 29 when the school is named after her. Teen Acres is a long-term resident care facility for teenage girls northwest of Sterling.

Holyoke’s Chamber of Commerce recently announced that Corinna Emery has been hired as the organization’s new secretary. Emery assumed her new position April 20.

 

Fifty Years Ago — April 23, 1970

The Holyoke town council will consider granting a cable TV franchise to Midwest Cable TV, Mitchell, Nebraska, at a special meeting April 27. If the franchise is granted by Holyoke, the town will be served by channels 2, 4, 7, 9, Denver; 2, 9, North Platte, Nebraska; 10, Goodland, Kansas; a weather station channel; AM and FM reception; and channels 3 and 6 which presently serve Holyoke. The monthly charge will be $6.

Governor John A. Love signed the bill April 14 changing Colorado State College in Greeley to the University of Northern Colorado. The new name will become effective May 1.

Last week the agriculture department removed all acreage restrictions from the 1970 sugar beet plantings in an attempt to boost production. This year’s national acreage allotment was set last fall at 1,450,000 acres after three unrestricted crops. In February the allotment was boosted to 1,550,000. “Producers now may plant as many 1970 crop sugar beets as they wish,” officials said, but they cautioned that “a producer cannot afford to plant more beets than a factory will contract to receive.”

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago — April 26, 1945

After 11 years of business in Holyoke, the barbershop operated by Al Smith will be closed Thursday evening. The owner will devote his time from then until June 1 to preparing the electrical shop which he, in company with L.L. Kunkel and H.J. Sandstead, plans to open to the public on that date.

The Midwest Hereford 4-H and FFA invitation judging contest held Monday morning as part of the program before the judging of the sale cattle was participated in by six teams — four 4-H teams and two FFA teams. The 4-H teams participating in the contest were Sedgwick County, Logan County, Perkins County and Phillips County. FFA teams were Grant and Holyoke. Phillips County’s 4-H team was victorious with 1,543 points. The boys that judged for Phillips County were Floyd Hagemann, John Webermeier and Leland Miller.
