Police ramping up holiday DUI enforcement
Holyoke Police Department is targeting patrols to crack down on impaired driving as part of a national push by Mothers Against Drunk Driving to promote traffic safety during the holidays.
Last Friday and Saturday, Nov. 16-17, a designated patrol car hit the streets to perform traffic stops and investigate suspicious vehicles.
Holyoke Police Sgt. Mark Werts said the officer didn’t contact any drunken drivers but that the amplified police presence could be functioning as a deterrent for potential offenders.
“Proactive enforcement works just as well as having to make an arrest,” he said. “I’m hoping people saw us out and about and that’s why they curtailed making that kind of mistake.”
The officer performed bar checks and issued tickets and warnings for other traffic violations.
