Presidential primary set for March 3 in Colorado

Tuesday, March 3, is Colorado’s presidential primary election for the Republican and Democratic parties.

Phillips County voters, like others across the state, received their ballots in the mail the week of Feb. 10. Ballots must be returned to the Phillips County clerk’s office by 7 p.m. on election day in order to be counted.

Phillips County Clerk and Recorder Beth Zilla emphasized that this does not refer to a postmark date. Ballots must be in her hands by March 3 at 7 p.m.

There is a 24-hour drive-up drop box located across the street from the east parking lot of the courthouse at 221 S. Interocean Ave. in Holyoke. A drop-off box is also located at 145 S. Colorado Ave. (Haxtun Town Hall) and is available for drop-off ballots Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.

Ballots may also be mailed or delivered to the county clerk’s office. Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m.; Saturday, Feb. 29, from 8 a.m.-noon; and Tuesday, March 3, from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

Many candidates on ballots

The Colorado presidential primary election lists six candidates on the Republican ballot and 17 on the Democratic ballot.

However, two of the Democratic candidates (Michael Bennet and John K. Delaney) have withdrawn their names since Jan. 3. Any votes cast for them will not be counted.

The Holyoke Enterprise will be reporting the election results in the March 12 edition of the paper, noting how the Phillips County vote compared with the actual outcome statewide.

Caucuses, assemblies planned

Caucuses and assemblies for the Phillips County Democratic and Republican parties have also been set for next week.

The Democratic caucus and assembly will be held Saturday, March 7. A specific time and place will be designated soon and will be announced in an advertisement in next week’s Enterprise.

Republicans in the county will caucus at 10 a.m. on Saturday, March 7. Those in precincts 1, 2, 3, 4 and 8 will meet at SunSet View Community Center in Holyoke. Republicans in precincts 5, 6 and 7 will caucus at the Haxtun Community Center.

The Republican County Assembly in Phillips County has been set for Sunday, March 15, at 3:30 p.m. at the Phillips County Event Center.
