Public invited to help pack meals with Mercy Meals of Southwest Nebraska

    Mercy Meals of Southwest Nebraska became a nonprofit organization Sept. 16, 2012. Since its opening day, 1,368,297 meals have been packed at the packaging facility located at 112 S. Tecumseh Ave. in Wauneta, Nebraska.
    Each packaged meal costs approximately 12 cents and serves up to six children. Mercy Meals provide carbohydrates, protein, vitamins and minerals by utilizing a mixture of rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables, and chicken flavored vitamin and mineral powder.
    Each of these ingredients are essential nutrients needed to prevent/reverse malnutrition, which kills one out of every 15 children in developing countries before they reach the age of 5.
    Meals have been shipped to the Philippines, Vietnam, Kenya, Zimbabwe, Swaziland, India, Haiti, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Mexico, The Navajo Nation, local food pantries and disaster relief centers.
    October packaging days open to the public will be Monday, Oct. 9, from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, Oct. 21, from 9-11 a.m.
    Packing days in November will be Monday, Nov. 13, from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 18, from 9-11 a.m.
