Pursuit, shooting under investigation

On Monday, Dec. 28, at approximately 10:44 p.m., officers of the Holyoke Police Department attempted to stop a vehicle driven by a suspect who had an outstanding felony warrant at the intersection of South Sherman Avenue and Phillips County Road 20.

According to an HPD press release, the vehicle immediately fled from officers at a high rate of speed on County Road 20. Officers initiated a pursuit of the vehicle with the assistance of a Phillips County Sheriff’s Office deputy.  

The vehicle began traveling through open fields and ended up getting stuck in a snow-filled creek bed between County Road 37 and County Road 35, south of County Road 22.

The press release said that as officers approached the vehicle, several shots were fired. Officers rendered immediate aid to the suspect, but the subject was pronounced deceased on scene. No law enforcement officers were injured during the incident.

HPD said the subject’s name will not be released until notification of next of kin. This is an ongoing investigation by the 13th Judicial District Attorney’s Office as well as the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Details of the incident will be released at the completion of a thorough investigation.
