Toffee Bars

Suzan Hatteberg said her husband made this toffee bar recipe often while growing up, and he passed this recipe on to her. It’s a favorite at family gatherings.

1 cup brown sugar
1 cup butter
1 egg yolk
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 cups flour
1 package milk chocolate chips

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix the first six ingredients together with a large two-prong fork and then add the flour. Press dough into a greased 15-inch-by-10-inch-by-1-inch pan. Cook until light brown (about 15 minutes). TIP: Watch your baking close. You will see the dough rise and then fall. As soon as the dough falls, take it out of the oven. Immediately sprinkle one bag of milk chocolate chips on top of dough. Let stand until the chips are soft and then spread evenly. Cut bars immediately and let cool.
