Dolores Haskell got this barbecue meatball recipe from a friend in Grant, Nebraska. Years ago, it was a winner at the Keith County Fair in Nebraska. Haskell said it makes 15 large meatballs or 50-60 small meatballs. “It serves a crowd, is very good and freezes well,” she said.

Barbecue Meatballs

    3 pounds hamburger
    2 eggs
    2 cups quick oatmeal
    1 cup chopped onion
    2 tablespoons salt
    1/2 tablespoon pepper
    2 tablespoons chili powder
    1 13-ounce can evaporated milk
    
    SAUCE
    2 cups ketchup
    1 1/2 cups brown sugar
    2 tablespoons liquid smoke flavoring
    1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    1/2 cup chopped onion
    
Mix together the first set of ingredients and shape into balls. Place balls in a 9-inch-by-13-inch pan in a single layer. Cover with sauce and bake 1 hour.
