Recipe Train

Deb Williamson loves how this chocolate sheath cake recipe delivers a rich and moist cake every time. She usually puts buttercream frosting on it, but it’s great without any frosting or with a little ice cream. The recipe came from her late mother-in-law. Williamson said it was always a favorite of her father-in-law, and she made it for his 97th birthday this year.

Chocolate Sheath Cake

2 cups flour
2 cups sugar
4 tablespoons cocoa
1 cup water
1 stick margarine
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 cup buttermilk
2 eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla

Combine flour and sugar. Combine cocoa, water and margarine and bring to a rapid boil; then add it to flour mixture.
Dissolve baking soda in buttermilk and add to flour mixture. Add beaten eggs and vanilla.
Pour into a greased and floured pan. Bake at 350 F for 25 minutes.
