Recipe Train

Gina Martin’s family has been making this recipe since she has memories of the 4th of July. It was only made annually for Independence Day celebration on the farm, and she continues to make it every year for the 4th as well. “My kids and husband love to customize their ice cream usually by adding their favorite treats such as crushed Oreos, Butterfingers, Reeses or fresh fruit,” said Martin.

Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream

    4 eggs (well beaten)
    2 1/2 cups granulated sugar
    6 cups whole milk
    4 cups heavy whipping cream
    1 1/2 tablespoons vanilla
    1/2 teaspoon salt
Custom flavors: crushed Oreos, Butterfingers, Snickers, Reeses, etc. (Martin family favorite is Oreos)

Add sugar gradually to beaten eggs, beating well after each addition. When mixture becomes stiff, add remaining ingredients and mix thoroughly. (I mix all ingredients plus crushed candy in a gallon ice cream container due to large amount of liquid).
Use ice cream machine to freeze by using kosher salt and ice. Follow directions as recommended by your machine. If you prefer to add toppings after ice cream is set up, you can do that as well!
