Relay raises $30,000

The first official Relay For Life of Northeast Colorado sent a message to cancer: Game On!
Members of 15 teams from Logan and Phillips counties gathered at the Logan County Courthouse in Sterling June 10 to spend eight hours celebrating, remembering and fighting back against cancer as they walked around the square.
This year’s Relay combined the two counties under one name as a result of structural changes by the American Cancer Society aimed at directing more funding to cancer research and services for cancer patients.
During the opening ceremony, Wilmer Johnson, who with his wife, Donna, was named 2017 Honorary Survivor for the Relay, said he and the other organizers of the first Relay in Logan County in 2003 were inspired by the event in Phillips County.
Johnson applauded those who have kept the tradition alive since then. “It’s much harder to keep something going ... than what it is to get it started,” he said. “When something gets started, everybody gets enthused about it.”
The opening ceremony also included a “mission moment” from co-chair Tracy Glissmann, who spoke about what support for the American Cancer Society means.
