According to a press release from Holyoke Police Department, on Saturday, Jan. 11, HPD was dispatched to the Family Dollar store located at 143 W. Denver St. for a report of a person threatening to rob the store.

The store clerks reported that a male, later identified as Alex Salas, age 49, reported to be a transient, came into the store and told the staff to get onto the floor and that it was a “stickup.” Salas made several other threats to the staff and eventually left without taking anything. Salas did not produce a weapon.

Salas was located shortly thereafter after a tip from a local business owner and was taken into custody by Sgt. Mark Werts and Phillips County Undersheriff JR Myers without incident. He was located in the 100 block of East Denver Street.

Recommended charges of criminal attempted robbery (class 5 felony) and menacing (class 3 misdemeanor) will be requested to the district attorney against Salas. Salas had two outstanding warrants and an extensive criminal history.
