Salas excited to join sheriff’s department

Wednesday, Sept. 18, Jorge Salas was sworn in as Phillips County Sheriff’s Office’s newest deputy.

Even though he’ll be wearing a different badge, he’s no stranger to local law enforcement. Salas is grateful for the opportunity Holyoke Police Department gave him when he began working as an officer in December 2018.

He quickly became known around town for his friendly personality and emphasis on spending time around children. That’s not going to change with his new position, and Salas is excited to be able to double his impact by putting his skills into practice for the entire county. “Now it’s a larger scale,” he said.

“I’m a huge people person,” Salas added, noting that building relationships and giving back to the community are very important to him.

Salas will be able to spend time at both Holyoke and Haxtun schools now, something he sees as making a lasting impression on kids.

The new deputy is also bilingual, which allows him to reach a large, diverse group of Spanish-speaking people from several different countries who live in Phillips County. “It’s another tool in the toolbox,” he said.

In the last couple of months, Salas became an active shooter training instructor, so he hopes to implement classes for community groups in the future.

Salas is a 2000 graduate of Holyoke High School. He has six years of experience in the Department of Corrections as well as six years of service in the Army before he completed the Highlands Ranch Law Enforcement Training Academy. He and his wife, Amber, live in Holyoke with their four children.

Salas replaced former Deputy Wyatt Bishop, who is now working with the Logan County Sheriff’s Office with K-9 Nyx.
