Schumann recognized

    Alvin Schumann of Haxtun has been recognized by Veterans of Foreign Wars with a certificate of appreciation for his efforts to support local veterans.
    Schumann helped organize the VFW post in Haxtun, and in 1976, the national organization presented him with a certificate expressing its gratitude.
    He spent his adult life working in military security stateside and operated a shoe repair business in Haxtun. He used his shoe repair business to provide training and jobs for returning servicemembers. He also connected veterans with mental health resources through VFW and other channels.
    Regarding the investment he’s made in building resources for Haxtun’s veterans, Schumann said he feels a duty to serve the community of veterans that includes so many of his family and friends.
    “I’m proud of it, but I also feel like it’s something I should be doing,” he said.
