Sunday fire consumes garage on West Gordon Street

Although one wall remains intact, a garage in the 500 block of West Gordon Street was completely lost to a fire Sunday afternoon, Jan. 27. The structure was fully engulfed when Holyoke Volunteer Fire Department arrived. Firefighters worked for over an hour to put out the flames and keep the fire from spreading to nearby houses. Homeowners Luis Perez and Dalia Ortiz and their kids were home at the time of the fire, which HVFD told them could have started from an electrical problem. In addition to the structure itself, losses include a motorcycle, around $1,500 worth of meat stored in freezers, the kids’ new Christmas presents and the family’s chickens. The heat from the fire also affected the house — the back door was melted shut, windows were shattered and shingles were damaged. While the event gave them a scare, the family is thankful that the house was spared and no one was hurt. — The Holyoke Enterprise | Johnson Publications
