In January, Brent Vasa was accepted for a coveted internship with the Colorado Golf Association, facilitated by the U.S. Golf Association.
Now, Vasa is looking to take new responsibilities as an administrator in the sport that has come to play a central role in his life.
Brent, son of Pat and Danette Vasa of Holyoke, is a 2012 Haxtun High School graduate. This past spring and summer, he taught golf clinics through the City of Holyoke recreation department for youths ages 7-15.
The P.J. Boatwright Internship Program is run through the U.S. Golf Association. According to the USGA, 121 paid internships were offered in 2018, including placements with 59 allied golf associations across the United States, Puerto Rico and Mexico.
When Vasa first heard of the program, he was working at Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge and finishing his studies at the Golf Academy of America in Orlando, Florida.
Although initially interested in communications, Vasa was accepted as a tournament intern, and was responsible for a variety of administrative tasks. He worked with the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado and also had the chance to instruct middle school golfers.
The internship began in January, and, in May, Vasa attended an orientation with 46 other P.J. Boatwright interns at USGA’s headquarters in Liberty Corner, New Jersey. Attendees toured the Golf House and were introduced to the many activities that the USGA sponsors and facilitates.
