Violence awareness, self-defense taught
Fort Morgan-based victims’ advocacy group S.A.R.A., Inc. and the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office hosted a free self-defense class at Haxtun Community Center on Thursday, June 14.
The event was open to the public and was promoted specifically for young women. It included a lecture by S.A.R.A., Inc. executive director Paula Bragg and a hands-on martial arts demonstration.
About a dozen people participated in the class, which lasted an hour and a half. A second class scheduled to take place at the Phillips County Fairgrounds in Holyoke on Friday was canceled due to a lack of participants.
Other sponsors of the series included the Holyoke Lions Club, Phillips County Victim Assistance Program, Haxtun Police Department and Haxtun Hospital District.
The first part of Bragg’s presentation focused on things that she said many people take for granted — driving home without being followed, for instance, and the window coverings and types of locks in a house.
