Wray Museum plans Jones-Miller celebration

In recognition of one of the most important Paleo-Indian archeological sites ever uncovered, and in conjunction with Archeology and Historic Preservation Month in Colorado, the Wray Museum is proud to announce a full schedule of events and educational programs for Saturday, May 13, as part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Jones-Miller Bison Kill Site.

Led by the late Dr. Dennis Stanford of the Smithsonian Institution in the summer of 1973, with funding provided by the National Geographic Society, the three-year “dig site” yielded a treasure trove of Stone Age artifacts and bison bones dating back more than 10,000 years. The important archeological site was found the previous summer by local landowner Robert “Bob” Jones while he was leveling ground for a cornfield along the Arickaree River. It became known as the Jones-Miller Site in honor of Jones and Jack Miller, a former anthropology instructor at Colorado State University who was among the first experts to examine this unique Hell Gap Complex discovery.
