Dragon baseball adds 2 wins against Merino
Dragons secured two more wins, beating Merino in both games at last Tuesday’s doubleheader. Games were postponed from Saturday, April 22, to April 25, due to weather.
In the first game, Holyoke took an early lead, and it looked like it might be a short game, but the Rams fought back and held the Dragons just short of a mercy win, taking the game all the way into the seventh inning. After six and a half, HHS won 9-1.
As the weather got colder, the teams went into game two, where neither scored early in the game. Dragons won again after six and a half innings, 2-0, bringing their season record to 15-1.
Holyoke 9, Merino 1
Caleb Deaver started Tuesday’s first game on the mound for the home team, and the Dragons held Merino scoreless in the first.
Inaccurate pitching by Merino put Jesus Trejo and Gunnar Kroeger on base, and both went on to score, bringing the score to 2-0 after one inning. Brendan Mayden earned an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
In the second and third innings, Merino remained scoreless. Brenden Kage led off the second inning for the Dragons, hitting a single. Mauro Morales kept things moving, also hitting a single, and Seth Watson earned an RBI, bringing Kage home.
In the third inning, Dragons benefitted from several balls. Mayden, Tristan Sullivan, Kage, Morales and Deaver each hit singles, and Kage, Morales and Trejo earned RBIs. By the end of the inning, HHS had six more runs.
Starting the fourth inning with a score of 9-0, Merino managed its only run of the game. Despite singles hit by Kroeger and Sullivan in the sixth, neither team scored in the last three innings, and the game ended 9-1.
