Golf team continues strongest season in program history; 4 prepare for regionals

Holyoke girls golf snagged another victory — its third in four tournaments — at the Lady Dragon Invitational in Holyoke Tuesday, April 25, and three HHS varsity golfers placed in the top 10 individually.

As regular tournaments come to an end, HHS golf is gearing up for 3A regional competition Monday, May 8, at Highland Meadows Golf Course in Windsor. Holyoke’s team will be made up of juniors Grace Dille, Regan Van Overbeke and Dominique Penzing; and sophomore Brenna Sullivan. This will be Dille’s third regional appearance, Penzing’s and Sullivan’s second and Van Overbeke’s first.

Since the HHS girls golf program is still relatively new, coaches Marcia Dalton and Nick Flaa were glad to see so many girls join the team this year. Larger numbers seem to indicate a growing interest in the sport, and this year’s success shows that the skills are clearly increasing too. After its fourth tournament of the season, Holyoke’s team ranked first in the league.

“We continue to get better, not only with our golf swings and strategy, but with our mental toughness,” coach Nick Flaa said. “Anyone would be crazy to think that you are going to hit every shot perfectly, so to persevere the way we have through some of our rounds has been the difference, especially this last Tuesday.”
