Youth run, bat and throw at the Rockies Skills Challenge

The resurgence of the local Rockies Skills Challenge in Holyoke had kids ages 6-13 traveling from Sterling, Haxtun and Chappell, Nebraska, to participate May 27.

City of Holyoke recreation director Victoria Timm hosted the event, as a member of the Colorado Parks & Recreation Association. The first place boy and girl from each age group qualifies to compete at the Windsor sectional July 16 for a chance to go on to the state championship.

“The kids who came out were very talented,” Timm said. “I think we will be well-represented in Windsor.”

The challenge is made up of three skills: base running, batting and throwing. First, competitors were timed running from second base to home plate. Next, they had three chances to bat off a tee for their longest hit. Finally, they threw from the outfield, being measured for distance and accuracy.

Those finishing first and continuing to sectionals are Holyoke’s Brandon Adler in the 6-7 age group, Sterling’s Isaac Poe 8-9, Chappell’s Zander Polk 10-11, Haxtun’s Megan Walker 10-11, and Holyoke’s Emma Thompson 12-13.
