34 students race in Bolder Boulder
It doesn’t take a track meet to get Holyoke kids excited about running — 34 students grades 5-9 made a trip to Boulder to run in the Monday, May 29, Bolder Boulder 10K race, one of the world’s largest running events with about 50,000 participants every year.
Traveling with six sponsors, the group participated as part of the BB Racers Club, an elementary and middle school program specific to student groups who want to run in the annual Memorial Day event. This was the second year that Holyoke participated, and the local turnout was more than double last year’s participation.
Overall, the BB Racers Club had 100 schools and about 2,000 students running.
Holyoke was one of six schools that arrived Sunday for an overnight stay before the morning race at the University of Colorado-Boulder campus, an amenity offered through the program for rural schools traveling to participate. As part of the campus stay, Holyoke students enjoyed a free planetarium show and had dinner with pro athletes from several different countries.
