Working on the railroad, all 10 livelong days

Workers use a tamping machine to align rails and pack ballast rock at the railroad crossing on Highway 385 on the north end of Holyoke. New rail, ties and ballast are all being laid in the construction process, which is the railroad equivalent of resurfacing a road, according to workers. The crossing is scheduled to be closed a total of 10 days from June 9-18. —Johnson Publications photo
