Candlelight vigil held for 18-year-old
A candlelight vigil was held in memory of Collin Penrod, 18, of Grant, Nebraska, Monday evening, July 3, at the South Platte High School football field in Big Springs, Nebraska, where he would have been a senior this fall. A tragic accident Saturday, July 1, claimed Penrod’s life.
It was a tragedy for all involved in the 6:50 p.m. two-vehicle accident July 1 at the intersection of Highway 385 and Sedgwick County Road 20, approximately six miles south of Julesburg.
Penrod was a passenger in the 2012 Chevy pickup driven by Dora Gregory, 63, of Haxtun. They were eastbound on County Road 20.
David Klinkhammer, 54, of Kimball, Nebraska, was northbound on Highway 385 in a 2010 Chevy pickup.
According to Sgt. Rob Madden of the Colorado State Patrol, Gregory failed to stop at the stop sign and her pickup was hit on the passenger side by Klinkhammer’s pickup.
All three were transported to Sedgwick County Memorial Hospital in Julesburg. Penrod was pronounced dead on arrival. Gregory suffered serious injuries and was kept overnight, and Klinkhammer was treated for minor injuries.
CSP Trooper S.A. Schlessman investigated the accident, noting Klinkhammer was using a seat belt and Penrod and Gregory were not.
