    Melissa Memorial Hospital administrator John Ayoub announced during the regular meeting of East Phillips County Hospital District Aug. 27 that Dr. Aaron Wilson has recently been hired and is expected to begin next July.
    Jeff Weaver has been hired to fill the vacant executive director position for Phillips County Economic Development Corporation. He replaces Erica Ayoub, who announced her resignation earlier this year.
    A grand total of 24 days broke the 100-degree mark in June, July and August this year in Holyoke, with the hottest day reaching 110 degrees on June 26.
    Travis and Melissa Bumgardner, Pharm.D., owners of Abts Pharmacy in Julesburg and Haxtun, announced that they have started the process of converting Abts Express in Holyoke into a full pharmacy.
    Gary Lancaster will be giving a presentation on the U.S. Cavalry at a special Phillips County Historical Society event Sept. 9.

    Silver Screen Video will soon open for business in Holyoke. The video rental store, owned by Mark and Heather Weinhaus, is located at 136 N. Interocean Ave. in the former Body Works building.
    Local Colorado U.S. Route 6 Heritage Corp. representatives Ken Oltjenbruns and Mary Tomky are happy to announce that they have taken a giant leap forward in the process of building a Route 6 visitors’ center/museum and have officially received their nonprofit 501(c)(3) status approval from the IRS.
    Phillips County commissioners were pleased to report Aug. 31 that they were successful in their Energy Impact grant request of $167,112 to Phillips County and the Phillips County 911 Authority Board. The money will go toward the remodeling and upgrading of equipment in the Communications Center.
    Alexis Richards, 9-month-old daughter of Lacey Richards (a former resident of Holyoke) and Nick Perkal of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and granddaughter of Steve and Debbie Richards of Holyoke, will appear as a featured extra in the pilot episode of the new USA network television show “In Plain Sight,” which will air sometime around the first of November.

Sept. 10, 1992

    As a major phase of the Phillips County Courthouse project nears completion, the county clerk’s office will be moving from its current main-floor site to the newly remodeled basement area next weekend.
    At the Holyoke City Council meeting Sept. 1, after reviewing a sample ordinance from Sterling that addresses the “unauthorized accumulation of weeds, brush, refuse or rubbish on any premises,” the Holyoke board concluded that the City attorney should draft a similar plan to be presented at a future meeting as a proposed Holyoke ordinance.
    
Fifty Years Ago
Sept. 7, 1967

    Discussed at a regular meeting of the Re-1J board of education Tuesday night was a proposal to transfer the title for the school building and gym in Amherst to the Amherst Fire Department. Since the school and gym were paid for by residents of the Amherst area, the board of education expressed the opinion that the Amherst people should decide what should be done with the buildings, which were retired from Re-1J service following the 1966-67 term of school. If the Amherst firemen decide to accept the buildings, possibly as a community center, the board will transfer the title of the property to them.
    Lengthy hunting seasons for pheasants and waterfowl in northeast Colorado have been announced by the Colorado Game, Fish and Parks commissioners following a meeting in Denver. The statewide season on pheasant and quail will be from Nov. 11-19, but an extended season will continue through Dec. 31 in northeast Colorado.

Sept. 10, 1942

    William Meyer, music instructor in the Holyoke schools and bandmaster for the town of Holyoke, has extended an invitation to all former band members to join a town band, organization of which is being planned.
    The war production board released 50,000 of the refrigerators which have been frozen in the hands of dealers and distributors since Feb. 14 for sale to the general public after finding that they were not needed for “essential” purposes.
    The three-day county fair opens today, with more attractions added to give more variety. Two days of rodeo and horse racing will thrill spectators, and harness race exhibitions and trained animal acts have been secured.
