Eight-man vs. 11-man football in question once again
THE GRANT TRIBUNE-SENTINEL, Oct. 25 — The question of whether Perkins County (Nebraska) should play eight-man or 11-man football came back in front of the Perkins County School board at its Oct. 16 meeting.
Earlier this year, the Nebraska School Activities Association board approved a plan to use boys enrollment only to determine football classification, beginning with the 2018 season.
Schools with boys enrollments of 47 and under will be eligible for the Class D-1 and D-2, eight-man playoffs.
Perkins County enrollment for grades 9-11 submitted to the State Department of Education on Sept. 29 stood at 51 boys and 21 girls.
Under the new rules, Perkins County is ineligible for the eight-man playoffs for the 2018 and 2019 seasons.
However, because of low football participation numbers, moving to 11-man doesn’t seem to be a viable option. Perkins County currently has 20 participating in football.

County planning commission addresses manure composting
THE IMPERIAL REPUBLICAN, Nov. 2 — Chase County’s planning commission will seek further input from planning consultants before developing zoning regulations on manure composting.
The commission held a public hearing Tuesday to discuss the need to add manure composting to its zoning regulations.
More than 25 people attended the meeting with most coming from the rural area northwest of Imperial, Nebraska.
That’s the area where an organic dairy company has purchased a number of irrigated quarters for the eventual production of organic corn and alfalfa.
In addition, the company has indicated a desire to establish a 1,000-head organic dairy on the land tract.
A company spokeswoman said the dairy would compost its manure for later application to their organic fields. No commercial fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides can be used on organically-certified ground.
The company has already been composting some manure on their property northwest of Imperial.
