According to the Giving USA Foundation, the largest source of giving in the United States in 2016 came from individuals, who accounted for 72 percent, or $281.86 billion, of total giving. Individuals were followed by foundations, bequests and corporations. Nearly one-third of charitable dollars went to religious organizations in 2016, making such organizations the biggest recipients of charitable donations that year. Education, human services, grantmaking foundations and health organizations rounded out the top five recipients of charitable dollars.
