Jim Harvey is shown chatting with customers at Harvey’s Sweet Shop in Holyoke. Jim and Esther Harvey bought the Sweet Shop from Milton and Fern Deselms in 1954. When they first bought the Sweet Shop, they sold mostly candy (the penny kind, or even two for a penny), bulk and packaged ice cream, ice cream cones, sundaes, malts, sodas, fountain drinks and cold sandwiches. After deciding they needed a hot sandwich, Esther and her friend Inez Cranwell came up with the Yum Yum Burger. In the early days, they would open at 7 a.m. and not close until 11 p.m., or even later on Saturdays, and it was always the hangout for local teenagers. They sold the business in 1980 to Sonny and Mary Taylor. — Source: Phillips County Museum
