MPCC rodeo team coach wins team roping world series
McCOOK GAZETTE, Dec. 13 — Not everyone can boast about winning the World Series. Garrett Nokes can.
The McCook, Nebraska, cowboy took first place in the #12 Ariat World Series of Team Roping Finale on Tuesday night alongside his roping partner, Scott Smith, of Wray.
The men roped four steers in a total time of 30.82 seconds. It earned them $290,000 — part of $1.7 million the WSTR is paying out to contestants this year.
“It was awesome,” said Nokes. “It was one of those deals you try to prepare for, but when you’re backing into the box for that kind of money, you just try to go back to doing the same thing you’ve done for $300 on a Wednesday night.”
It’s the same advice he gives to students on the Mid-Plains Community College Rodeo Team that he coaches.

Sheriff’s office raids Wauneta home, finds 91 grams of meth
WAUNETA BREEZE, Dec. 21 — Members of the Chase County, Nebraska, Sheriff’s Office arrested William Nathan Hale, 36, of Wauneta, Nebraska, after a search of his residence yielded approximately 91 grams of methamphetamine.
Hale’s arrest culminated a seven-month-long investigation by the Chase County Sheriff’s Office involving the sale and distribution of methamphetamine. The investigation was led by Deputy Duncan Einspahr.
Chase County Sheriff Kevin Mueller said it appears the methamphetamine was being purchased in Colorado, transported to Chase County and then sold throughout southwest Nebraska.
The street value of the methamphetamine seized was estimated $9,100. The search also discovered drug paraphernalia, cash and 43 pounds of silver valued at $11,000. All of these items were seized by the Chase County Sheriff’s Office.
The investigation dovetailed an investigation by detectives with the Arvada Police Department. They were investigating the June 2 death of Natasha Rowley, 25, formerly of Imperial, Nebraska. She was found dead in her Arvada apartment as the result of an apparent methamphetamine overdose.

Haxtun BOE hires Nall as interim HS principal
HAXTUN-FLEMING HERALD, Dec. 20 — Alan Nall is set to return to the Haxtun School District following the holiday break. Haxtun Board of Education members voted to hire Nall as an interim high school principal during a meeting Dec. 14.
Nall, who had been with the district since 1999, resigned during a meeting last spring to take an administrator’s position at South Park Junior and Senior High School in Fairplay.
As he did before, Nall will serve as the high school principal when school resumes in January.
Superintendent Darcy Garretson recommended that the BOE hire Nall as principal during the meeting last week, stating that he planned to return to the area over Christmas break. “His abilities with students and staff were an asset to the school, and I know that he can help to smooth out some of the issues we are experiencing,” she said to school staff members and district accountability members.
Garretson said she proposed many budget cuts last spring to accommodate a decrease in State funding and most of those cuts either did not happen or cuts that were made were later rescinded, such as eliminating a bus route and an elementary teacher.
“I had not planned to cut the high school principal position, nor had the board,” Garretson added.
