    With a decrease in the pheasant population due to weather conditions in northeast Colorado, one local company has found a way to keep the tradition of pheasant hunting alive. Within the last year, Matt Newman has kicked off Newman Adventures — guided hunts, a hunting lodge, and facilities to raise pheasant, quail and chukar for their hunting preserve south of Paoli.
    As of the beginning of January, Jackie Reynolds has returned as the director of Phillips County Social Services. She held the director position for about six years before moving to Sterling, where she served as the executive director for Rural Solutions for the last seven years.
    After doing heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration work on the Front Range and in this area for the past couple of years, Ken Hoch of Holyoke is now focusing his business venture on northeast Colorado.

    Only 46 days in 2007 marked temperatures of 90 degrees or hotter, making it the coolest year in the last three.
    Officer Michael Worley was hired as the new Holyoke police officer on Dec. 26.
    Phillips County Historical Society is hosting a coffee-tasting event Jan. 13. Taste-test coffee from around the world and hear a “History of Coffee” presentation at the museum.

Jan. 14, 1993

    Chantel LeAnn Rafert took “First Baby of 1993” honors after her arrival at Melissa Memorial Hospital on Jan. 10. She is the daughter of Lennie and Peggy Rafert of Holyoke.
    Purina livestock feed, pet foods and supplements are now available in Holyoke through a new business called Northeast Feed & Supply. Owners of the new venture are Jerry and Vernette Haynes and Rick and Kathy Haynes.
    Through a restructuring effort, home health care services are now home-based through Melissa Memorial Hospital, with services being offered in a 50-mile radius of Holyoke. Colorado Plains Home Health Care is the new name for the home health care program which services Sedgwick, Phillips and Yuma counties and part of Logan County.

Jan. 11, 1968

    Two Holyoke brothers, Joe Jr. and Frank Paloucek, were honored Tuesday evening in Sterling as the top sugar producers in the Sterling factory district of Great Western Sugar Co.
    Joe McCallum, 22, joined the Holyoke police force on Jan. 3 as a patrolman trainee, according to Police Chief Paul Plummer.
    Farm Supply Inc. of Holyoke will participate in a major nationwide safety program this winter aimed at encouraging farmers to use roll bar protective frames on their tractors. The roll bar protection puts a steel frame around and over the tractor operator and is designed to protect him should his tractor upset accidentally.
    
Seventy-Five Years Ago
Jan. 14, 1943

    A drive to secure hunting knives and sheaths to be sent to fighting men in the jungles of the Guadalcanal and New Guinea and other places is being sponsored in the Holyoke community by the Holyoke post of the American Legion.
    Deposits in the First National Bank of Holyoke are approaching the one and one-half million dollar mark, it was shown in the statement of the bank at the close of business Dec. 31, 1942, when deposits totaled $1,378,642.56.
    Enlistments have been closed in the Army, except through the Selective Service on regular calls. Those desiring to volunteer must do so through the Selective Service. Enlistments are open for the Marines.
