Dinner, silent auction planned for Dr. Jerry Brandt

A heart attack. How’s that for a crummy Christmas present? On Dec. 14, Dr. Jerry Brandt was getting ready for the holidays just like everyone else. By the next day, he was in the ICU, preoccupied with simply getting well.
Brandt is now home, where he’s learning just how much the people of Holyoke care. “We are extremely grateful for the kindness of the community — not just for me but for my family as well,” he reflected.
In addition to the many calls, visits and offers to help, Brandt recently learned that First Christian Church is organizing a fundraiser soup supper for him. The dinner, as well as a silent auction, is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 18, from 5-7 p.m. in the Biesemeier Room at the Phillips County Event Center, organizer Monica Powell said. Brandt described Dec. 14 as a typical Thursday, his day off from his chiropractic practice. He’d been hunting that morning and previewed the movie at the Peerless Theatre that night. After the fact, countless people around the community commented that they had just seen him and he seemed fine.
He went to bed that night and nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Before long, however, he woke up with an incredible amount of back pain between the shoulder blades. After trying to “walk it off,” he realized that the pain wasn’t going away and woke up his son A.J. for help.
Thankfully, Brandt recalled, his wife, Debbie, had the foresight to give him a couple aspirin and get him to the hospital immediately.
