    Kurt Bollingberg of Bollingberg Seed Co. in Cathay, North Dakota, and Brian Engstrom of Engstrom Bean and Seed in Leeds, North Dakota, recently announced the purchase of Jack’s Bean Company, effective Nov. 15, 2012.
    After years of working to get an animal shelter in Holyoke, it appears as though the planning will finally come to fruition. The planned shelter is located on the east edge of town, just north of the gun club.
    John Baumgartner was recently recognized in the Winter 2012-13 Colorado High School Coaches Association’s “Colorado Coach” publication. He received an achievement award for 250 wins as the Holyoke High School boys basketball coach. He also earned the longevity award for 20 years of coaching.

    Holyoke Chamber of Commerce and Phillips County Arts Council want to beautify the welcome signs located at the four entrances to town and would like the City’s assistance in doing so.
    Over 100 landowners gathered Jan. 14 at the Peerless Theatre to listen to a presentation on trading carbon credits, hosted by the Haxtun and Sedgwick County conservation districts.

    Subject to final review of the Public Utilities Commission on Jan. 27, new features will be offered by Phillips County Telephone Company, beginning Feb. 1. Among the new features will be call trace, caller ID and blocking, priority call, call rejection, continuous redial and selective call forwarding.
    For his exceptional service and contributions toward the protection, conservation and management of water as a valuable resource, John Vasa of Holyoke was recently recognized as Outstanding Water Resource Person of the Year for the Ground Water Management District Association.

Jan. 25, 1968

    Approximately $300 worth of merchandise was stolen from the Amherst Market in a recent burglary, according to Phillips County Sheriff Fred Thietje.Wilbur E. Burchett, owner and operator of the store, said that cigarettes made up the bulk of the loss, along with about a dozen cigarette lighters and a couple cans of lighter fluid. Some pennies that had been left in the cash drawer were also taken.
    The Phillips County Extension office is being moved from the courthouse basement to new quarters on the second floor of the courthouse annex, across the street from the courthouse in the old hospital building. The office of the county health nurse, Mrs. Edna Hoppe, is also now located on the second floor of the courthouse annex.

Jan. 28, 1943

    The local rationing board office has announced that whenever any member of a family leaves for the armed forces, that person’s sugar ration book is to be turned in to the local rationing office, and whenever a death occurs, the book of the deceased is to be turned in also.
    People of the Holyoke community will be able to see the picture “You’re in the Army Now” at the Peerless Theatre on Thursday night, Feb. 4, by just bringing a piece of copper or brass.
    The Rocky Mountain states may lose the benefits of post-war motor travel if they fail to hook up with the Pan-American highway which will connect Alaska and South America.
