Yuma girls prove they’re No. 1 for a reason

Yuma girls have consistently demonstrated why they’re the top-ranked 2A basketball team in the state, and last Friday’s matchup in Holyoke was no different.
Holyoke fell to Yuma 28-39 in a very tough, very physical game.
“They’re No. 1 for a reason,” said Lady Dragon coach John Baumgartner.
After the weekend, Holyoke’s record stood at 10-2 while Yuma boasted a 10-0 record.
Baumgartner praised the Holyoke girls for their defense, noting it’s unusual for a team to hold Yuma to less than 40 points in a game.
“I liked how we finished,” he noted. While Yuma outscored the Dragons 25-10 in the first half, HHS put up 18 points in the second half while they kept Yuma to 13 in the third and only one point in the fourth.
Holyoke’s roster is still transitioning to fill in spots of injured players. “We’ve got some work to do,” said Baumgartner, noting he’d like to see improvement in elements like shooting, turnovers and rebounds.
The Lady Dragons will see Yuma again Tuesday, Feb. 13, on the Indians’ home court in a game that counts for league standings.
