First 911 call nears 50th anniversary

    The Colorado chapter of the National Emergency Number Association and Association of Public Safety Communications Officials, Intl., has announced its celebration of the 50th anniversary of the first 911 call.
    On Feb. 16, 1968, Alabama Speaker of the House Rankin Fite made the first 911 call from the Haleyville City Hall.
    From that small beginning, 911 technology has become more sophisticated in response to consumer expectations. Each advancement has improved the nation’s ability to deliver better, more reliable information to first responders so they can do their job of saving lives and property.
