PC Telcom to offer fiber internet service to Ovid
    JULESBURG ADVOCATE, April 13 — During Tuesday evening’s meeting with the Ovid town board, Mike Cline and Vince Kropp of PC Telcom announced to the board that they will be making a major investment in Ovid and will be replacing the town’s internet coaxial with fiber optics, making Ovid the second town in northeastern Colorado to have fiber service. Holyoke, home of PC Telcom, was the first.

Making Lake Yuma goose-free
    YUMA PIONEER, April 12 — The goose problem at Lake Yuma might be a thing of the past. Canadian geese have inundated the picturesque storm runoff pond frequently in recent years, oftentimes the lake being nearly completely covered in geese. Various efforts to run off the geese have not been long-lasting.
    Dan Baucke, a lifelong Yuma resident, saw a video about a motorized “predator” used to scare away geese, whose large congregations are a nuisance in several areas of the country.
    Baucke said he decided he could make one himself, and he did so. He said it is basically a remote-controlled airplane without the wings. The body is made of fiberboard, including a tail. It is painted white with mean-looking eyes and mouth. Inside is a radio-controlled electric motor. The body’s tail serves as a rudder.

Julesburg School District introduces new ag/FFA program
    JULESBURG ADVOCATE, April 13 — April 3, students of Julesburg High School and their parents were invited to an educational meeting to introduce a new ag/FFA program.
    Shawn Ehnes, superintendent of the Julesburg School District, briefly explained the history of ag/FFA at the Julesburg School District. The last year the district offered an ag/FFA program was in 1971. At that time there were nearly 180 students attending Julesburg High School.
    Today the school has around 75 students enrolled, but with advancements related to online education capabilities and options available, they plan to create a blended program that will once again expand ag-related learning and career options to students attending Julesburg High School.
    The blended program will be a combination of asynchronous and synchronous learning — a blend of online and hands-on learning in the classroom.
