PC Vet Hospital spays/neuters 46 cats as part of Humane Society project
GRANT TRIBUNE-SENTINEL, June 6 — Dr. Shannon Jensen and vet tech Jess Bollinger of Perkins County Veterinary Hospital spent their Memorial Day spaying, neutering and vaccinating 46 cats through a Humane Society trap-neuter-return project.
A ranch owner in Chappell, Nebraska, reached out for help after realizing she could not keep up with the basic needs of what she estimated were 150 cats. Four horses and four dogs also share the property.
She was going through 75 pounds of cat food every three days, and her property had become a place for neighboring communities to dump unwanted cats.
Representatives from the Humane Society of the United States worked in partnership with the Nebraska Rescue Council to create a coalition of animal welfare professionals to address the cats’ needs.

Student re-admission policy weighed
STERLING JOURNAL-ADVOCATE, June 7 — RE-1 Valley School District is considering changing its admission policy for students who leave the district and then want to come back. Principals shared their reasoning for requesting the change at a workshop Monday.
Under the revised policy, students who live in the district, but as of the pupil enrollment count date (currently Oct. 1) are enrolled in another school district (including online schools) or are in a home-based educational program, may not enroll in RE-1 during the same school year after the official pupil enrollment count date.
Such students may seek admission to RE-1 schools for the following school year. The superintendent may allow re-admittance only if unusual circumstances exist to justify the decision and must inform the board when such a decision is made.
No action was taken at Monday’s workshop, but Superintendent Dr. Jan DeLay explained this is something the principals have been wanting for awhile now and is something Eaton, Sheridan and Fleming school districts use.
