Around Town

Avoid certain streets next week
City of Holyoke crews will be doing their annual sealcoat project on several streets in town Tuesday-Thursday, July 17-19, between 4 a.m.-6 p.m. Residents should not park on the street and should make sure sprinklers are not getting water on the street.
Areas of town include South Bowman Avenue (100-1100 blocks), South Baxter Avenue (100-1100), East Bignell Street (100-300), North Morlan Avenue (100-200), South High School Avenue (100-300), East Jules Street (100-800), South Belford Avenue (100-1100), North Baxter Avenue (100-200), North Campbell Avenue (100-300), North High School Avenue (100) and East Carnahan Street (400-700).

Harvest nearing completion
Wheat harvest in the area moved into full swing last week and is anticipated to be close to wrapped up by the end of the weekend, if it stays dry.
Steve Young, with CHS Grainland, said Tuesday morning, July 10, that harvest is probably close to three-quarters done in Holyoke, while Steve Bahnsen with Paoli Farmers Co-op estimated they’re about 50-60 percent complete.
There was a sporadic start to the harvest, with Bahnsen reporting they took their first load June 26, but it was kind of a slow harvest until this week. Young indicated harvest started picking up July 2-3 for CHS Grainland members.
Both elevators indicated test weights are pretty good, with averages around 60 pounds per bushel. Young indicated that moisture was certainly down early this week, due to the heat. He added that proteins are better than last year, with probably more variability than normal.
Bahnsen said overall yields are probably running a little above average, but some have dropped way off.
