Dragons go 3 for 4 at Brush tourney

Holyoke softball put on a powerful performance at the Brush tournament last Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7-8, winning three games against Yuma, Wray and Akron, and losing one to Valley High School of Gilcrest.
Holyoke built steam over the course of the tourney, culminating in an 18-3 victory over Akron, before a 4-9 loss to Valley.
Coach Sherman Kage said the games were a strong start to the midseason, even as the Valley game offered learning opportunities.
“I think the games went exceptionally well; it was a really good confidence booster for us,” Kage said.

Holyoke 11, Yuma 2
A decisive fourth-inning push resulted in a nine-run lead and an 11-2 victory in Holyoke’s opening game against Yuma.
The game started slow, with both teams making modest gains and capitalizing on infield errors. Then, following a pair of singles, Lauren Herman hit an inside-the-park homer for three runs, and a succession of small plays brought the total lead to nine runs in the bottom of the fourth.
A quick fifth inning with no runs scored by either team sealed the game, with Holyoke on top, 11-2.
Batting for Holyoke, Herman hit a home run, a double and a single; Shianne Willmon and Sirissa Casady, a double and two singles; Correy Koellner and Sarah Razo, a double; Savannah Burris, two singles; and Molly Brown and Gabi Gordon, a single.
Herman and Koellner led RBIs with three, followed by Gabi Gordon with two.
