Come Out and Fly far exceeds all expectations
AKRON NEWS-REPORTER, Sept. 12 — Over 100 kids and adults took advantage of the opportunity to go on a free 10-minute plane ride at the first Come Out and Fly event Saturday, Sept. 8.
Phil Sims was the individual who came up with the idea, and he got the cooperation of Randy Hayes at the Colorado Plains Regional Airport and three other pilots, who brought their personal planes.
The event started at 7:30 a.m. and was supposed to stop around 11 a.m. Mother Nature did not cooperate at first, and it wasn’t until about 9 a.m. before the cloud cover was forced out by the sun, and the planes could start flying.
Those who did wait were so patient and gracious. The kids didn’t mind the wait, as they played in the meantime.

Clean energy plant getting greener
STERLING JOURNAL-ADVOCATE, Sept. 11 — Sterling Ethanol recently received a United States Department of Agriculture rural grant that allows the plant to go green and produce more of its own electricity.
Local leaders met Sept. 5 with plant president and general manager Dave Kramer to congratulate the company and learn more about the facility.
“The grant helps us to go green, making our own electricity so we don’t have to worry about coal producing our electricity,” he told the group.
Kramer, who also manages the Yuma and Bridgeport ethanol plants, said the USDA grant provides funds for the local plant to purchase and install a beer degasser and steam let-off turbine.
