Young people escape injury in train collision
    IMPERIAL REPUBLICAN, Oct. 18 — Two Imperial, Nebraska, teenagers escaped injury Tuesday when the vehicle they were in collided with a slow-moving train southeast of Imperial.
    Trevor Peterson, 16, was driving a 2002 Chevy Suburban and was accompanied by Brooklyn Christensen, 17.
    They had traveled to Peterson’s home during the noon lunch break at school to pick up some things. As they were returning to Imperial, northbound on Road 336, they didn’t see an NKC Railnet train entering the crossing.
    The northbound view of an approaching train is obsturcted by some trees, and Sheriff Kevin Mueller said Peterson did not see the train before entering the crossing.
    The engine struck the vehicle broadside on the passenger side. The vehicle was pushed off the tracks about 20-30 feet, coming to rest on the south side of the tracks.

Haxtun Hospital first in Colorado to implement life-saving technology
    HAXTUN-FLEMING HERALD, Oct. 17 — The Town of Haxtun is the first in Colorado to implement the GUARD 911 system. GUARD 911, HERO 911 and SCHOOL GUARD systems are smartphone apps and an integrated system that have the ability to do four things with the push of a button: alert 911, notify all law enforcement officers within a defined area, pinpoint a location and provide a digital map of the area.

Yuman making MMA pro debut on Oct. 27
    YUMA PIONEER, Oct. 18 — Anthony Brooks-Alvarez is going pro.
    “I have been waiting for this fight for a long time,” he said earlier this week.
    The Yuma resident, 27, will make his mixed martial arts debut Oct. 27 in North Platte, Nebraska, in a 135-pound bout against Jose Hernandez of Kearney, Nebraska.
