Dragons fare well in tough tourney
Holyoke placed three in the varsity tournament and three in JV action at the always-competitive John Higgins Invite in Lexington, Nebraska, Saturday, Jan. 19.
“This is one of the toughest tournaments we’ll see all year,” said coach Dusty McConnell. “It was a very good tournament for us,” he added, noting they were able to place six of eight wrestlers.
In the varsity tournament last weekend, Luis Chafino finished fourth at 160 lbs., Jesus Trejo fifth at 145 and Deacon Dittmer sixth at 152.
Chafino lost to a returning state champ in the semifinals, coming back for one win and one loss for his fourth-place finish.
Trejo met the eventual champion in the quarterfinals, losing a major decision. Battling back, he won two crucial wins before picking up a loss, then claiming a win for fifth place.
After two nice wins, Dittmer fell to the eventual champion in the semifinals, then lost two more to take sixth.
JV tournament action is also very tough at the John Higgins Invite. McConnell was pleased with the second-place finishes by Jessy Mosqueda at 106 lbs. and Michael Ramos at 160, as well as the sixth place by Nain Vasquez at 152.
Hastings, Nebraska, won the varsity tourney with 199.5 points, followed by Lexington 182, Scott Community in Kansas 153.5, Sidney, Nebraska, 144.5, Cozad, Nebraska, 128.5, McCook, Nebraska, 89.5, Adams Central in Nebraska 88, Holdrege, Nebraska, 80.5, North Platte, Nebraska, 70.5, Gering, Nebraska, 66.5, Gothenburg, Nebraska, 45, and Holyoke 35.5.
