Piggy bank contest teaches finance

    Fourth grade students at Holyoke Elementary School participated in a piggy bank contest from March 5-26.  
    The contest was sponsored by Colorado State University Extension in cooperation with First Pioneer National Bank of Holyoke.
    The top three winners for both of the fourth grade classes were recognized by Liz Favela of First Pioneer, with prizes provided by the bank.
    The winners for class 4A were the turtle by Lillian Miller, first; plinko game bank by Jacob Quintana, second; and the pink piggy bank by Roxy Santos Dominguez, third.   
    The 4B winners were the ATM machine by Sujey Bustillos, first; “Chaney Elevator” by Ryan Chaney, second; and “Dominguez Dreams” bank by Rubi Bencomo, third.
    Anytime is a great time to talk to children about money and how to manage it; however, with America Saves Week and Financial Literacy month in April, what better time to team up with teachers to bring this important topic to light for students?
    Research has shown that as little as 10 hours of instruction positively impacts students spending and saving habits.
