
Thomas and Lena Lane lived on a homestead 7 miles southwest of Holyoke for 14 years following their marriage in 1892, where Thomas was engaged in farming and stock raising. With the Holyoke Police Department being down to only two officers, HPD was the focus of a majority of the Holyoke City Council meeting on Sept. 2.
The Bullock auto auction in Grant, Nebraska, drew around 2,000 people to the sale on Sept. 6. There were over 600 bidders at the location south of Grant, with another 600 online bidders.
Austin Vieselmeyer won grand champion showman honors in the market hog division at the Colorado State Fair, and Kaylee Camblin was named grand champion intermediate showman in the market beef show.

Colorado Department of Education has adopted a growth model for evaluating Colorado Student Assessment Program scores to chart the progress each school has made over time.
Sarah Heermann of Holyoke earned state champion honors in Western Division of Level II for 16-to-18-year-olds at the Colorado State Fair Aug. 28-30 in Pueblo.
Twenty-Five Years Ago — Sept. 15, 1994
After a 19-year absence, Jim Blake recently returned to eastern Colorado in order to begin his duties as minister of the Holyoke Christian Church. He started serving in his new position Aug. 28.
Youth Challenge in Holyoke is proud to announce the addition of working staff member Apolonio Rubio, who is serving as director of Spanish evangelism.
Additional searches conducted by the Phillips County Sheriff’s Office in the last week resulted in the seizure of 25 more marijuana plants. The plants were found in a field southeast of Holyoke and were valued at $50,000. The plants, which ranged from 3 to 8 feet tall, were seized and destroyed.
Changes recently occurred in every position at the Holyoke Police Department. Barry Winckler was sworn in as the new chief of police at the Sept. 6 Holyoke City Council meeting, and it was announced that Bryan Wettstein was named sergeant, or second in command. Council members also voted to hire Michael Bobbitt as the department’s new officer.
Phillips County 4-H members winning grand champion honors at the Colorado State Fair were Jon Kleve, entomology, senior; Nicholas Colglazier, wildlife; and Randy Haynes, range management.
Fifty Years Ago — Sept. 11, 1969
The new 24-foot-by-48-foot multipurpose classroom recently purchased by the school board was put into use last Monday. This is expected to relieve some of the pressure at the high school.
The weather continues warm with cool nights and little or no moisture. Holyoke has received only a trace in the last seven days.
Seventy-Five Years Ago — Sept. 14, 1944
The past two Sundays have been busy days at the Holyoke municipal airport as planes have been flown here from Sterling and other points to use the newly prepared runways. The local airport has been approved for use by the Civil Aeronautics Commission, but designation for commercial purposes has not been desired pending construction of a hangar and other facilities.
The Holyoke store of J.C. Penney Company is in the highest ranking district in the whole country in the sale of bonds of the Fifth War Loan. The stores of the company competed by districts in the sale of bonds. The bond-selling activity exceeded by far the value of merchandise which the stores sold during the drive.
