Teachers ‘at the end of their rope’
STERLING JOURNAL-ADVOCATE, Oct. 9 — Hair being ripped from their head, being punched and kicked, profanities screamed at them. This is among the troubling behavior exhibited by students that teachers in RE-1 Valley School District are facing.
Concerns about student behavior issues were brought up Monday at a school board workshop, during discussion about ongoing behavior initiatives the district is working on. Superintendent Dr. Jan DeLay shared some of the work the district has been doing.
This year approximately 15 staff members will be attending a presentation by Kelvin Oliver, an educational consultant specializing in teaching the whole child through restorative practices and social emotional learning. He believes that the best approach to helping students is not to simply suspend them for poor behavior, but to get at the root cause of what’s causing the behavior.
The district also has ongoing training with special education staff and paras on Mondays when school isn’t in session, including a recent Crisis Prevention Institute training, which provided guidance on how to verbally deescalate a student and if the teacher or para has to go hands-on, the appropriate and safe way to do that.
“My only concern is (the behavior analysis training) doesn’t happen until November and I have teachers that have come to me that are at the end of their rope right now. Right now, the only thing that’s holding them to their job is that they’re dedicated,” said Heather Fetters, South Platte Education Association representative.

City purchases Harchelroad Motors Corvette building for fire hall
IMPERIAL REPUBLICAN, Oct. 10 — The City of Imperial, Nebraska, will soon have a new fire hall.
At a regular meeting Oct. 7, the council approved the purchase of the Harchelroad Motors Inc. building at the south end of Broadway for $650,000. The purchase also includes two small buildings behind the large building.
The structure has housed Corvette display and performance work since the building was erected about 2007. Vice President Dillon Harchelroad said the majority of business and customizing concerning Corvettes is already being handled at the main dealership on Highway 6-61.
He added that Harchelroad Motors is no longer pursuing Corvette performance work, which has shrunk due to a poor agricultural economy.

YUMA PIONEER, Oct. 10 — Yuma’s Jimmie White and Arick Davis spent last weekend helping set a new world record, while also raising funds for a nonprofit that helps those dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder.
The long-time motorcycle-riding friends and Harley-Davidson enthusiasts traveled 1,851 miles to Texas.
Their Harleys — a Tri-Glide Ultra and a Road Glide Ultra — were two of 3,864 Harley-Davidsons that participated in a parade Saturday at Cox Field Airport near Paris, Texas.
The “Bring It Home Parade 2019” set a new world record for a Harley-Davidson parade. It was documented and verified by the Guinness Book of World Records. The event shattered the previous world record of 2,404 Harley motorcycles that had been set in Patras, Greece.
