The Allis-Chalmers combines are being pulled by Dale Colglazier on a Case tractor and Harold Colglazier and C.B. Colglazier on John Deere tractors. The man leaning on the tractor in the center of the photo may be Soren Jensen. The boy standing next to him is Earl Colglazier, and the other man to the right of him is Merle Colglazier. Following the successful health fair March 21, at which Melissa Memorial Hospital had a shingles informational table, MMH is looking to begin conducting a shingles clinic in the near future.
Dylon Lousberg and Hunter Razo took advantage of the warm spring weather March 28 to set up their slackline at Holyoke City Park.
Ten Years Ago — April 1, 2010
Harlan Stern became the newest member of the East Phillips County Hospital District board at the March 23 meeting. Stern was appointed to fill the vacant seat left by Ray Malleck, who announced his resignation in January. Stern will fill the seat until the May election.
The House has approved HB 1369, the school finance act, but it was a vote that brought some legislators to tears. HB 1369 cuts $365 million in state funding for school districts statewide. According to the bill’s fiscal note, which explains the impact, the cut will result in a 6% drop in state funding for every school district in the state for 2010-11.
Twenty-Five Years Ago — April 6, 1995
The Golden Plains Extension office will be adding a new livestock agent to its staff in mid-May. Brad Gillmore will resume the Extension agent position vacated by Pete Fagerlin last October.
Bernie Brown is the new manager of the Holyoke and Julesburg branches of First Security Bank. He assumed his new position March 27 and noted that in addition to managing the branches, he is an executive vice president at First Security.
Olga Sullivan of Sullivan’s Appliance & Air recently announced that Dave Williamson is a partner in the Holyoke business. Williamson will be handling service and installation for the company on a full-time basis.
Melissa Memorial Hospital’s cardiac rehabilitation center has been named the Myrlen E. Chesnut Cardiac Rehab Center. The announcement, which was made on Doctors’ Day, March 30, commemorated Chesnut’s 25 years of service on the MMH medical staff.
Fifty Years Ago — April 2, 1970
Plans are being developed for locating a potato processing plant in eastern Colorado. The idea was initiated by the area potato administrative committee, Greeley area industrial development committee and the Extension service.
East Phillips County Hospital board assumed operation of Melissa Memorial Hospital on April 1. It had been operated by the Lutheran Hospital and Homes Society since Aug. 1, 1965. Upon the recommendation of the medical staff consisting of Dr. Timmerman and Dr. Roark, the hospital board admitted Dr. Myrlen Chesnut to the “courtesy staff” of Melissa Memorial Hospital.
Seventy-Five Years Ago — April 5, 1945
L.L. Kunkel, H.J. Sandstead and A.P. Smith are putting in an electrical appliance store, complete with an up-to-date service department. The new store will be located one door west of the Clover Blossom Creamery and will be open for business about June 1. The trade name selected is Highline Appliance Co.
Having finished a thorough remodeling and modernizing job on his former implement and repair building, R.H. Suhr announced today the addition of new lines of merchandise to the business, especially the Firestone line of hardware, motor vehicle accessories and supplies.
Spring was given a severe jolt beginning Sunday night and continuing through Monday and Tuesday in the Rocky Mountain region. The snow totaled only a few inches here but was said to amount to 30 inches or more in the mountains.
