This group photo from a community picnic was taken at Philip Woodhams’ home northwest of Holyoke near the Beachville community around 1896. Philip and Mary Woodhams came to this area in 1877. Five Years Ago — July 2, 2015

First Baptist Church of Holyoke has welcomed a new pastor, Jeremiah Krieger, who is settling into Holyoke and is set to begin preaching at the church this month.

Phillips County 4-H member Drew Stewart was installed as the incoming District 5 president on the 2015-16 Colorado state 4-H officer team during the state 4-H conference awards ceremony June 25.

Holyoke swimmers posted 10 new records at the Colby, Kansas, meet on June 27, bringing the season total thus far to an impressive 34 records for the local swim team.

 

Ten Years Ago — July 1, 2010

The Holyoke Gold Babe Ruth team came up one point short of winning the Border League championship Saturday, June 26. They lost to Oshkosh, Nebraska, 4-3 in the final game.

Temperatures in the last few days have been a little on the warmer side. On June 25, bank signs downtown were reading in the triple digits, with the official reading at 96 degrees.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago — July 6, 1995

Effective July 3, First National Bank of Holyoke became Colorado Community First National Bank.

Chet Dickson stopped in Holyoke on June 27 on his trek from Texas to Montana in a covered wagon.

Ray Baldwin, physician assistant, is now taking appointments at Dr. Myrlen Chesnut’s office at 520 S. Interocean Ave. He is commuting to Holyoke on Mondays and some Tuesdays in order to relieve the doctor’s load and the clinic congestion.

Dr. Jerold Brandt of Holyoke was one of a number of runners who participated in the June 30 Torch Run to kick off the Cornhusker State Games in Nebraska. Runners started at various edges of the state, carrying torches across the state and meeting in North Platte. Brandt started his segment at the Colorado-Nebraska state line just west of Venango and ran 6 miles before handing the torch off to the next runner.

 

Fifty Years Ago — July 2, 1970

Zeezo, Safeway’s mirth-provoking clown, will be on hand to delight children young and old at the Holyoke Safeway store on July 6. Zeezo, considered one of the outstanding clowns and magicians in the United States, will thrill youngsters with magic tricks and rides in his miniature Model T Ford automobile.

Extremely warm temperatures have speeded crop development in Phillips County the last week. Approximately 75% of the winter wheat acreage has turned color, with some cutting started Monday.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago — July 5, 1945

The new building of the R.E. Gleason Motor Company is nearing completion after months of difficulties incident to war and weather. In front of the new building on his lots at the southeast corner of Phelan and Denver, cement pavement has been poured, covering an area of ample space for servicing cars and trucks with gas and oil.

It is easy to understand why the House of Representatives in Washington would support a bill to place their speaker in the White House in the event the president, a former vice president, died. A bill to make the House speaker third in line to the presidency has been passed by the House. Speaker Sam Rayburn would become president if President Truman did not live through his present term. The Senate, it is believed, is not favorable to the measure.
