Marlon Prottsman
Marlon Jay Prottsman was born Sept. 20, 1954, in Grant, Nebraska, to Wayne and Eunice (Behrens) Prottsman. He died Oct. 9, 2020, at his home in Imperial, Nebraska. He was 66 years of age.
He grew up and attended school in the Venango, Nebraska, area, graduating from Venango High School in 1972. He continued his education at Mid-Plains Community College in their welding program.
Marlon was inducted into the U.S. Navy in August of 1973, serving in the Seabees. After his discharge in May of 1976, he returned to the family farm south of Venango, assisting his family in the farming operation. Marlon joined the Peace Corps which took him to Swaziland, Africa, where he served for three years. He then returned to Venango and bought the local bar, naming it the Swazi Bar, after his service in Africa, which he owned for 10 years.
Marlon gained employment with the U.S. Postal Service as mail carrier, serving Grant and Venango for over 10 years. He really loved his position, driving around the three counties he covered.
On Feb. 20, 2003, Marlon married Barbara Kay Jensen in Las Vegas, Nevada. The couple made their home in Venango until moving to Imperial in 2014.
Marlon was a man who loved to meet people and to hear their stories. He had the most infectious laugh and smile. He wanted to hear strangers’ stories everywhere he went and made friends usually with a Heineken in his hand.
Marlon was the kind of guy that would tell you exactly what he felt, and if you listened to him he would tell you about his love for the freedom we have in America and how thankful he was for that. He would always listen to you and have a chuckle at the end.
He was the type to find joy in life and enjoyed little kids — if they smiled and laughed at him, it would make his day. He found commonality with the tribe he served in Swaziland during his Peace Corps years. He loved connecting with people and ideas.
