Five Years Ago — Nov. 5, 2015

Holyoke teachers are using this semester to become familiar with their Chromebooks that they will be utilizing for instruction in 2016. Students anticipate the second-semester startup of the school’s 1:1 device program in January — putting a Chromebook in the hands of each student in grades 5-12.

In the future, newly elected officials will be getting salary increases of 30%, reported county commissioners at their Oct. 30 meeting. Earlier this year, the state Legislature approved 30% salary increases for elected county officials. Counties were given the option to accept the approved increase or request the Legislature to lower it to 20%, 10% or no increase in the next Legislative session.

 

Ten Years Ago — Nov. 4, 2010

Nitrogen-filled tires are now being offered at Scholl Service Center. The new machine purges, or sucks, all of the air from the tire before filling it up with nitrogen. This ensures all of the oxygen is out so moisture won’t build up and the tire will be filled with pure nitrogen.

Ballyneal Golf Club has achieved designation as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses, an Audubon International program.

 

Twenty-Five Years Ago — Nov. 9, 1995

Voters in Holyoke School District voted 557-457 to eliminate the director districts to go to an at-large representation. Waiver of some 1992 Amendment One limitations (known as a de-Brucing issue) was approved in all seven entities where the question was posed in this county — Holyoke Re-1J School District, Haxtun RE-2J School District, Phillips County, Phillips County Recreation District, city of Holyoke, town of Paoli and town of Haxtun.

After dispatching in the Phillips County Communications Center for four and a half years, Darlene Johnson will be moving into the director’s position as of Nov. 11.

 

Fifty Years Ago — Nov. 5, 1970

If you are missing a garbage can, check with the Starbucks. They still have three left out of eight that ended up on their lawn on Halloween night.

The permit filed for Holyoke to receive Denver TV channels by microwave and cable would take at least another year before being approved by the Federal Communication Commission because of the backlog of permits filed. Midwest Cable TV will go ahead and service Holyoke residents with a cable system and by using a very powerful antenna will bring in channels 2 and 9, in addition to a clear and steady picture from channels 6 and 3, and would also include a weather scanner and possibly the new Channel 4.

 

Seventy-Five Years Ago — Nov. 8, 1945

A few pranks were played by youths of the town Tuesday night. A four-wheel trailer was turned on its side, and Harry William’s service truck and the car of Dorothy Litch were reported moved from the places they were parked by the owners. Another prank, on the dark side, and believed to have been done in malice aforethought, was throwing tar on the doors of the Legion Hall and on the sign at the Anderson Roller Rink.

Brother L.E. Lunsford, Sedgwick, has accepted the pastorate at the local Christian Church and will commence his work on the field Sunday, Nov. 11.

In the regular monthly meeting of the town council Monday night, the land comprising the main portion of the Holyoke golf links was presented to the town as a permanent addition to the town’s recreation grounds.
