
Charles H. Worley and Clyde B. Worley are pictured with relatives in 1918. Their parents were Milton N. Worley and Maggie L. (Zoll) Worley, who were early Phillips County pioneers. Milton arrived from eastern Nebraska in 1886. Maggie lived on a nearby homestead, and they were married in 1888. Charles was born in a three-room frame and sod house in 1889, and Clyde was born in 1898. In 1917, Charles signed a World War I draft registration card in Yuma. He served in France for 18 months during the war.

A whirlwind week led Justin Drescher, 22, straight to New Orleans, Louisiana, and the New Orleans NFL football team as a long snapper. Drescher’s grandmother Susanne lives in Holyoke, and his father, Jay, grew up here and played sports for the Dragons.
HHS cheerleaders brought home a runner-up trophy from the Class 2A State Spirit Championships held Dec. 4 at the Denver Coliseum.

Douglas Hatfield brings 30 years of counseling experience and a strong interest in rural America to the new Department of Family Services, which has been set up in Phillips County, effective Dec. 1.
After battling with more than 100 teams at an October regional competition and facing 10 top teams in the finals, Holyoke accountant Claire O’Neal and teammates were named 1995 national champions of Tax Challenge. O’Neal and three teammates made up the University of Denver team which turned in the best overall tax solutions for Arthur Andersen’s national collegiate tax competition that tests students’ federal tax law knowledge and planning ability.
Up With People is coming to Holyoke as the first stop in its 1996 tour.

Rev. Vernon May, former pastor of the Nazarene Church, Holyoke, will conduct services for the congregation until the arrival of their new pastor. The new pastor, Rev. Victor Carg, Los Angeles, California, will arrive about Jan. 1. He is a native of the Sterling area.
Activities offered in senior high school girls physical education classes are archery, badminton, indoor hockey, volleyball, deck tennis, softball, basketball, touch football, golf, tennis, trampoline, table tennis, rhythms, self-defense, posture and body conditioning.
Strong winds in the middle of last week caused appreciable damage to wheat fields with insufficient top growth. With continued warm weather and favorable moisture, some additional growth should be realized before the crop goes into winter dormancy.

The Holyoke light and power department strung lines of colored lights across Interocean and Denver avenues the latter part of last week, running them from the tops of the buildings on opposites sides of the streets. The multicolored lights brighten the entire business section of town and impart a bit of Christmas spirit to those visiting the downtown section after sundown.
Although the supply of edible fats and oils are such that consumer rationing is no longer necessary, the supplies of industrial fats — those used in making soap and in the manufacturing process of many essential items — is still very short.
