On Saturday, Dec. 19, Phillips County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to County Road 23 on a report of a man with a gun making threats to his family, according to a PCSO press release.

Deputies discovered that Levi Garrett had used a shotgun to assault his common-law wife and her two children.

The wife and children were able to escape the home in a car; as they did so, Garrett fired the shotgun at them.

The wife told deputies that Garrett was out of control, depressed and suicidal.

She was taken to the hospital in Haxtun where she was treated for a broken ankle and other wounds.

With the assistance of the Holyoke Police Department, Haxtun Police Department and the Colorado State Patrol, entry was made into the home, and Garrett was taken into custody. He was taken to Melissa Memorial Hospital where he was evaluated and released. Garrett is held in the Adams County Jail until bond is posted.

Garrett is charged with attempted murder in the second degree, menacing with a real weapon, assault in the first degree, violation of bail bond conditions, violations of a protection order and domestic violence.
